As a rule, real estate agents don't get involved in rentals in Orange County. Sometimes people tell me that they would like to rent in a senior community for a while, and see if they like it. Unfortunately, rentals in these areas are scarce, and there is no central database or Multiple Listing for rentals.

The best advice I can give is to check out the local classified ads to see if anything is available for rent.

There are many choices in assisted housing in Orange County and its suburbs. A caregiver should know the answers to the following questions before locating suitable housing for a senior:

Can the person be left alone during the day?

	Does the person need special equipment or services due to physical limitations?
	Does the person need 24-hour medical supervision?
	Does the person need help with bathing, dressing, or home maintenance?
	Could this person have Alzheimer's disease?
	Does this person need to socialize more?

The best resource I've ever seen that lists all the available housing alternatives is at http://www.sandiegoeldercare.com. It lists all the retirement apartments, board and care homes, intermediate care facilities, and skilled nursing facilities in San Diego. There's chapters about hospice, in-home solutions, healthcare services, and more.

The "San Diego Eldercare Directory" is a printed version of the above information, and you can order it from their website. It's perfect to give to those who don't have access to a computer, or to bring with you to San Diego while you're looking around.
